The best thing to do is use all natural elements to clean your outdoor patio furniture. This should be done thoroughly at least twice a year. Spring and Autumn are the recommended times for this. Some people just hose their furniture down with a pressure washer. These tools are not created for this purpose and can seriously damage what they are used on.

First, use a dry brush to scrape off any sticks or other large debris as well as bird droppings, dirt and grime. A Nylon bristled brush is best for this. Next you will need to spray down the furniture with the water hose. Cushions should have covers removed before starting the process. If your furniture is vinyl or plastic then follow the hose-down with a good scrubbing. This is done with the Nylon brush and a bucket of warm, soapy water.. Rinse the soap and you’re done. This is applied to the cushions of a vinyl patio set. The covers, however, should be cleaned in a washing machine.

If you’re patio set is made from Aluminum then you will skip the scrub down with water and use a solution of one part vinegar and one part water. Rinse away, this solution will help prevent tarnishing of the Aluminum. So not use items like baking soda or ammonia because they will ruin the furniture.

An alternative to the plain soap and water method is a bleach and baking soda mixture. This is only for plastic outdoor furniture. Combine one quart of bleach, one-third cup of laundry detergent and one cup of baking soda into a gallon bucket. Fill the bucket to the top with warm water. This is great for those mildew stains that just seem to never come off. Use a rag or a brush to apply this solution then rinse with water. This should be done outside and probably wearing gloves if you’re sensitive to the bleach.

When it comes to cleaning  your outdoor patio furniture, there are multiple ways to clean it without using the harsh chemicals. Just a little elbow grease, some soap and water. If you give furniture a regular wipe down with a rag then you won’t have to scrub it more than twice a year.

1. Think of a budget – figure out prior to purchasing items a fix amount of money that you are willing to spend and stick to it. Considerable sales are done after 4th of July when prices go down significantly. You have the option to save money by just replacing cushions and other outdoor accessories.

2. Placement of the furniture – you have to ask yourself a couple of questions before purchasing the furniture. The most important ones would have to be: Will it stay in the sun all day long? Will the furniture sit on a hard surface or grass? What views of the scenery do you want to enjoy? Will it be next or far from the home? 3. Measure the space – you should keep in mind that the chairs that are around a table will take an additional 24 inches of space. More than that, you will need approximately 24 to 26 inches from the back of the chairs in order to be able to walk around. Prior to purchasing, we advise you to go home with the measurements of the furniture you want to purchase and use chalk so that you draw the dimensions on the floor. If your outdoor space is limited, we would recommend a bar table set in comparison to a full-sized table. Regular bar stools will conserve space in comparison with regular bar chairs.

4. Functionality – again, you need to answer yourself a couple of questions, such as: do you prefer seating for quiet reflection? Do you need a large table and a couple of chairs or do you want a basic set of chairs with an end table located between them?  What are your requirements as far as storage space is concerned?

5. What do you plan on buying – dining table, hammock, patio swing, serving table, ottoman, rocker, lounge chair, glider, dining chair and so on. Determine what exactly you are searching for.

6. Picking out the suitable material – choose something that will be durable and look nice at the same time. Just as important when picking out material, look for something that requires minimal maintenance.

7. Choose the suitable pillows and cushions – think of a place to store them when you are not outside so that they will not start degrading. We recommend that you search for those pillows that have some kind of color stay protection, as well as polyester fibers to allow air to filter through. Purchase double side pattern cushions.

8. Umbrella choice – a light, neutral color model because a model that has bright colors will look faded and dull by the end of the summer.

9. Storage – think of a place to put all the outdoor furniture during the winter months.

As far as their durability is concerned, the tropical woods last from 50 to 80 years and North American woods from 10 to 25 years. In most cases, tropical wood costs more than North America.

5. Plastic – is very affordable and the ideal solution for those of you that are on a strict budget. In most cases, this type of furniture is stackable. It is available in a wide variety of styles and endless color possibilities. If you choose this type of furniture, you must clean it by spraying it down with the same mildew busting product you use in your shower and hosing it off.

Another upside of plastic is the fact that it is often used to look just like other materials that aren’t as durable. It is very common for outdoor furniture that looks like wicker to be created out of plastic.
